Killington (United States) Skiing Holidays

Killington - USA
Resort Height: 323m

Killington is the largest ski area in Eastern North America and operates more lifts on a single mountain than any other on the continent. It also has a global reputation for its network of snowmaking machines, which it believes is the world’s largest. In these days of concerns about climate change, the power consumption of such machines isn’t always a great thing, but Killington has replaced all of its machines with efficient low energy snowguns and has switched to a renewable energy power supplier.

Killington’s ski area spreads across seven inter-connected mountains and offers a huge range of terrain. Although there are a few hotels at the base of the slopes, the resort has grown up along the access road so it is handy to have a car to get about, or you can use the shuttle bus.

Beginners

Killington’s ski school has a reputation for innovation in its ski school teaching, offering the Graduated Length Method (GLM) of teaching, known as Ski Evolutif at another pioneering resort, Les Arcs in France, where skiers start on short skis doing parallel turns from the start and gradually progress on to full length skis. This differs from the conventional method of learning the snowplough technique with your legs in a forward pointing wedge on full size skis from day one, and gradually learning to get your skis parallel. Once you have mastered the basics you’ll find more than 50 easy runs to test out your new found skills on.

Intermediates

Intermediates won’t get bored on a week at Killington with the huge choice of groomed cruising runs, narrow classic New England trails, mogul slopes, steep runs and more than 15 runs cut through the trees, there’s a lot of choice. This huge variety includes New England’s longest run the 6.2 miles (9.9 km) Juggernaut run.

Advanced

With 40 percent of the terrain graded advanced and 80 black diamond runs to choose from, Killington again offers more steep graded runs than any other North American resort. Famous trails include the Outer Limits mogul field and runs including Double Dipper and Downdraft.

If you’d like to improve your technique the ski school offers a range of programmes including new ‘Mogul’ and ‘Learn to Fly’ two-hour clinics .

Snowboarding

A leader in snowboarding, Killington offer numerous terrain parks and features, including the 430-foot (130m) long Superpipe at Bear Mountain, featuring 18-foot (five metre) walls and cut by a Silver Zaugg. The park on Reason has medium features off the top of Killington Peak; the second park at Ramshead offers small – medium features on Timberline and the third park at Bear Mountain showcases medium and large signature features on Bear Trap, Dreammaker and the Outer Limits Rail Park. It hosts world class athletes and each season. For first-timers, Killington’s partnership with Burton Snowboards means the resort offers a Burton Learn to Ride program for riders ages 13 and older.

Other Activities and Facilities

Off-mountain activities including dog sledding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and ice skating. Many of the accommodation options include swimming pools, hot tubs and, saunas.

There’s a good range of shops spread along Killington Road up to the slopes with a mini-mall at the end of the road. For more choice you can drive to Rutland or to the factory-outlet mall at Manchester.

Après Ski and Dining Out

No visit to Killington is complete without an evening in the legendary Wobbly Barn which is one of North America’s great bars and restaurants. It’s still run by the family of Bob ‘Tuna’ Evans who tirelessly managed and promoted it for most of the year since it was established it in the 1960s up to his retirement. The Barn is so popular it has to employ city centre style bouncers.

The Wobbly Barn is one of about 100 bars and restaurants around Killington’s base that help to maintain its status as offering the hottest nightlife in the Eastern US. This reputation is also fuelled by a full-on activities calendar which brings at least one big and lively event to the resort virtually every week of the season.

Families

Located at the Ramshead Family Center, the children’s Ski and Snowboard School at Killington offers Max 3/Max 5 programs, designed to provide individualized attention as children are introduced to snow sports. Max 3 offers one instructor for every three students in the First Tracks program for children ages 2-3, while Max 5 offers one instructor for every five students in the Ministars (skiing) and Lowriders (snowboarding) for children ages 4-6, Superstars for children ages 6-12 and SnowZone for kids ages 13-18. In addition, Camp Freeride for intermediate and advanced level children aged 7-18, who are looking to improve their skills in Killington’s terrain parks, is also a Max 5 program. For babies and non-skiing children, the Friendly Penguin Daycare Centre, located in the same one-stop Ramshead Family Center, accepts children aged from five months to six years.
