Breckenridge (United States) Skiing Holidays

Breckenridge
Resort Height: 2926m

The most popular US destination resort for many years, Breckenridge is an old mining town with nearly 250 historic buildings in Colorado’s largest historic preserved area, that has been developed in to one of the world’s top ski resorts, attracting well over one and a half million skiers and boarders each winter.

The ski area is spread across four mountains (known as peaks 7, 8, 9 and 10) and access to them from the resort has been transformed since the 2006-7 season with a new gondola lift connecting the resort with the different bases. The different mountains are suited to different types of skier and include the world’s highest chairlift.

For the past decade Breckenridge ski area has been owned by the neighbouring resort of Vail. A joint lift pass valid at the two ski areas along with other Vail-owned Colorado resorts Keystone and Beaver Creek is available. The resort is constantly evolving and a new base will open at Peak 7.

Beginners

When a resort operates eight modern and easy-to-use conveyor lifts, you know it has thought through what beginners need to have the best chance of learning to ski as quickly and effectively as possible. Indeed, with more than 600 professional instructors and gentle beginner slopes, Breckenridge is one of the best places in the country to learn to ski, snowboard or Telemark, teaching more beginners than any other ski and ride school in the country.

Intermediates

Breckenridge is one of the larger ski areas in the US with more than 2,300 acres of terrain containing more than 150 trails, and extending nearly five kilometers from east to west and four miles from north to south. The longest trail is the 5.6km long Four O'Clock trail. A great way to get your bearings on arrival is to sign up for the free Mountain Orientation Tours which are staged daily from 10am to noon. Just turn up at the Beaver Run SuperChair on Peak 9 or at the base of the Colorado SuperChair on Peak 8 to join in. Peak 7 has some of the best intermediate terrain with seven wide-open trails, comprising 165 acres, packed with great rollers and dotted with tree islands.

Advanced

More than half of the terrain at Breckenridge is classified as advanced or expert level. The Imperial Express lift accesses some of the resort’s steepest slopes and bowls. All four areas contain a variety of mogul-strewn as well as groomed trails. The Ski and Ride School’s elite instructors offer all day clinics focused on Breckenridge’s steep double black terrain.

Snowboarding

With five terrain parks and four half pipes, Breckenridge is one of the best equipped resorts in the world for freestyle boarders. Add to the mix 772 acres of powder bowls and that’s the free riders satisfied too. All levels of boarder are well accommodated. For beginners the Siderider Junction is a tree trail designed just for snowboarders, offering wide ski runs through the trees and providing a fun challenge. This dedication began early, some 25 years ago, when Breckenridge was one of the first resorts to embrace the then renegade sport.

The Freeway Terrain Park and Super Pipe on Peak 8 is Breckenridge’s award-winning pro park, containing the resort's largest features and was first created in 1998. This park plays host to world-class athletes, competitions and exhibitions throughout the season, and is often the first park and pipe to open in the US each winter, thanks to a team of dedicated snowmakers, park and pipe designers and Breckenridge’s high altitude and early snowfall. It typically features six big jumps and more than 23 rails.

Other Activities and Facilities

With more than 180 shops and boutiques to visit, as well as 16 art galleries and museums Breckenridge is a major destination for shoppers.

Sports facilities include ice rinks, indoor tennis courts and fitness centres. You can also take a sleigh ride, go dog sledding, snowshoeing or even take a tour of one of the gold mines which helped spur Breckenridge’s first boom over a century ago.

Other facilities include medical centres, dentists, chemists and a library.

Après Ski and Dining Out

With over 100 bars and restaurants to choose from, Breckenridge's nightlife offers visitors a lot of options, ranging from the conventional bars and lounges to raging nights in techno clubs, to new age relaxation in oxygen lounges, to kicking back with a micro-brew at one of many laid-back bars. A good idea is to consult the free local newspaper, the Summit Daily News, for restaurant specials and discounts.

For those looking for a little hip-hop dancing action and great deals on beer, head to the Salt Creek Saloon on Tuesday and Thursday nights. For a more upscale experience, the Blue River Bistro has live music on most nights.

Après Ski- Relax those leg muscles and grab a drink with the local crowd at Rita’s or Burke and Riley’s on Main Street.

Culinary options include Chinese, sushi, burgers, salads, BBQ, brewpub, steaks and ribs, seafood, wild game, vegetarian and organic, continental, Northern Italian, pizza, subs, pasta, Southwest and Native American, Mexican, java coffee and bagels, Cajun, European deli sandwiches, French, Southern Italian, Thai, American regional, chocolate, ice cream and the list goes on…

Families

There are world class facilities for families on Breckenridge’s ski slopes. The ski school operates new state of the art facilities at their Village base location, with special teaching courses geared progressively to children aged from three to 13. Additionally, the resort offers a nursery program for children between the ages of two months and three years. There is a dedicated website for children: www.breckkids.com

Both the Peak 8 and The Village at Breckenridge facilities offer consolidated check-in, ticketing, rental and meeting places offering parents the ease of one stop shopping for all of their children's ski school needs. Full-day lessons include lunch and a small memento for each child to take home.

Intermediate to advanced level skiers and riders ages seven-13 can sign up for the Peak Adventure Series which consists of three mountain adventures, each adventure will take them on an exciting journey across the resort with fun and challenging experiences along the way.

There are special trails just for children including resort mascot Ripperoo’s forest trail or the magical Dragon Trail. The Haunted Forest trail is for the brave!
