Beaver Creek is one of the world’s newest resorts, opened 25 years ago. During its short history it has managed to make its mark in world skiing however, predominantly as a purveyor of high class ski holidays, with luxurious lodging and gourmet restaurants. The resort employs 150 ‘hosts’ whose job it is to maximize your enjoyment on the mountain and in the village by greeting you, helping to carry equipment, providing grooming reports and locals’ tips, and leading free mountain welcome tours each day. When the lifts close in the late afternoon, reward yourself for getting through another tough day in paradise with a fresh chocolate chip cookie served daily by Cookie Time chefs, and tell your friends about your amazing day on the slopes— the resort will mail a Beaver Creek collector postcard anywhere in the world, free of charge.
Along side this reputation for excellence in customer service, Beaver Creek has built a reputation as a serious ski area on the mountain, hosting Alpine World Championships with one of the toughest downhills in North America. The resort is owned by Vail Resorts and is a near neighbour to Vail itself. Lift tickets are valid at both areas as well as at other company ski centres Breckenridge and Keystone, a short shuttle ride away. A new gondola that opened for the 2007-8 season connected Beaver Creek with the town of Avon, further increasing the après ski options available.
Adult Group Lessons are offered on gentle terrain served by easy-to-ride lifts. The First Time Series is a particularly well designed option for beginning adults. The Buckaroo Express Gondola accesses some of resort’s best beginner terrain.
Beaver Creek has a more than 100 easy and intermediate level runs, so you have plenty of choice. In order to make the best use of your time and find your way around, it’s worth signing up for a free tour of the ski area at the start of your stay. For intermediate level skiers and above, mountain hosts offer complimentary daily tours at 10am, meeting at the top of the Centennial Express Lift (#6). The two-hour tour of the mountain will show you the terrain that suits you best. For a different twist on the runs you descend you can opt to ‘Ski with a Ranger’ and participate in an environmental education tour with a US Forest Service volunteer teaching you about the National Forest and local ecology whilst skiing.
Constructed for the 1999 World Alpine Ski Championships, Beaver Creek’s Birds of Prey race course is widely recognized as one of the top race courses in the world, and is the only venue in North America to hold a World Cup Men's Downhill race each December. You can also participate in the ski school’s Talons Challenge, in which you ‘conquer’ 13 black and double-black diamond runs and about 7,500 vertical metres (23,722 vertical feet) in one day. The school also organizes clinics designed for novice racers who wish to learn how to run gates, improve their racing skills or strengthen the fundamentals of skiing.
Three parks and a Superpipe are open to skier and riders. Park 101 is a small park, featuring rollers, dots and other terrain features that will allow lower level riders of all ages to learn weighting and unweighting of boards and skis. Zoom Room is a progressive small to medium park providing the necessary terrain for aspiring park skiers and riders to progress further in their skills.
Moonshine Terrain Park and Pipe is a medium to large park with a pipe for those aspiring to higher performance levels. The resort's Superpipe is located at the top of the intermediate Latigo run on Beaver Creek Mountain.
Beaver Creek has a year-round outdoor ice rink, library, arts centre, several galleries and museums and about 40 shops. Winter activities available besides downhill snow sports include snowshoeing and cross country skiing.
There are several spas. You can pamper yourself with a Barefoot Massage at the luxurious Allegria Spa or treat your spouse (and yourself of course!) to a Couples Massage at Spa Struck at The Charter.
Beaver Creek has a sophisticated après ski scene and a wide selection of luxurious dining options. However, the locals tend to hang out at the rowdy Coyote Café and enjoy New York Style pizza at the newly expanded Blue Moose. This also has the "20 for 20" wine bar where you can choose from 20 selections of wine with each bottle priced under . You can get your sushi fix at the Foxnut, which offers Asian fusion and sushi in an intimate setting.
Moving upscale you can celebrate a special occasion in the private Wine Room at the new Rocks Modern Grill in the Beaver Creek Lodge, or let executive chef Geordy Ogden of Saddle Ridge wow you with his "Mexican-Asian fusion combined with American sensibilities".
The most well heeled can spend a romantic night at over 3000m (9,800 feet) at Trappers Cabin, the resort's ultimate ski-in/ski-out mountain retreat, complete with cabin keeper, private chef, outdoor Jacuzzi, lift tickets, lunch on the mountain and more.
The Ranch, a state-of-the-art children’s ski and snowboard school that aims to revolutionize the way children learn to turn was launched by the resort for the 2007-8 season. The 4,000 square foot, on-mountain centre is located at the top of the Buckaroo Express Gondola and is surrounded by premier beginner learning terrain. The facility’s picture windows will allow parents to discreetly view their youngsters learning to ski and ride on customized slopes designed to facilitate the correct body movements. Parents can also rest easy knowing their children will have healthy and fresh food options at lunchtime. All natural Coleman meat, Horizon organic dairy and a yogurt bar is served as part of Vail Resorts’ Appetite for Life initiative. Wireless touch screen technology at each lunch table allows instructors to stay seated with the kids while placing food orders.
Ski school favourites include Park-ology, an introduction to terrain parks, and the Talons Challenge, a quest to ski or ride 13 of Beaver Creek’s toughest runs in one day. Beaver Creek also operates the child-friendly Buckaroo gondola, a customized learning area and a beginner terrain park. After the lifts close, check out the new Western Family Dinner Theatre, glow stick ski down and fireworks display, kids tubing, ice skating, storytelling around the fire pits and more.
