Resort Guide

Verbier has built a reputation as one of the world’s ’must ski’ resorts. Situated on a sunny, south west facing plateau, at 1500m it has all the attractions and atmosphere of an ancient Swiss village, although in fact most of it has been added since the 1950s, with the original village complete with 17th century chapel lying a little way beneath the modern resort.

Verbier’s success is the result of its wonderful setting, with views out towards Mont Blanc, its well equipped village and its great skiing which begins with the sunny slopes of Savoleyres and Ruinettes and builds to the peaks of the Mont Fort glacier. The slopes continue on for 400km (250 miles) linking half a dozen ski areas together to make the 4 Valleys, the largest ski area in Switzerland.

Beginners

Nursery slopes are located close to the resort at Les Moulins and Les Esserts. After initial classes with ski school you will be able to progress on to the wide, rolling and gently sloping Savoleyres runs. La Chaux, within easy reach by the new Chaux Express lift, offers easy sunny slopes.

Intermediates

Most of the slopes around Verbier are suitable for beginners, and the whole 4 Valleys area is also open to those who have passed beginners level, although it may be wise to take the cable car down to Tortin to make the connection to the rest of the area rather than one of the off-piste routes. It’s worth considering heading across the Vallee de Bagnes on at least one day of your stay to visit the small separate ski area of Bruson, which has a selection of easy and intermediate level runs that are off-the-beaten-track but, thanks to its north-east facing slopes, usually has great snow conditions.

Advanced

One of the world’s top resorts for advanced skiers, Verbier offers step groomed runs, mogul fields, off piste powder, high mountain touring, in short everything the expert skier could dream of. The many attractions include the Tortin bowl which is infamous for its mogul fields. Verbier’s status is such that it stages a range of expert ski events, including a 24 hour freeride race, the Verbier Ride, an X Games qualifying event, the Verbier Xtreme on the fearsome north face of the Bec de Rosses and a speed skiing competition where racers aim to pass the 200kph mark.

Snowboarding

The 1936 terrain park in La Chaux has three lines (beginners, advanced and pro) with many boxes and rails. There’s also a boarder cross course at Le Tailley. Adrenaline Verbier operates a ‘Learn to Ride’ centre with Burton equipment.

Other Activities and Facilities

In resort there’s an indoor swimming pool, ice rink, cinema, an Alpine museum and a good range of shops. More than a dozen different centres offer massage, beauty treatments, physiotherapy and acupuncture. You will also find art galleries, internet cafes, banks, chemists, dentists, doctors and a post office.

On the snow there are marked snowshoe trails and cleared winter hiking paths. There are two 10km long toboggan runs. Tandem paragliding jumps are also available. The Medran Parc is a suspended course, 800m long, of hanging bridges, rope ladders and assisted climbs.

Après Ski and Dining Out

Verbier has more than 50 bars and restaurants and a reputation for lively nightlife centred on the village square. There are four night clubs of which the Farm Club and ice Box are popular choices.

40 restaurants provide wide ranging dining options including Argentinian, Italian, Japanese and Mexican along side the traditional Swiss Alpine establishments.

Families

Verbier has families fully catered for. Babies and toddlers aged three months and older can join the fun at the non-ski nursery Les Schtroumpfs. From age three the Kids Club at the Swiss Ski School offers the ideal conditions for first time skiers with a private ski slope served by two lifts. The ski school has more special classes for older children in different age bands. Les Elfes Day Camps cater for children aged eight to 18 staying in the resort.
