Serfaus is a compact village in Austria's upper Inn Valley, made up mostly of large chalet-style hotels and guest houses.

The village has a long history which can be traced back some 3,500 years, but keeping right up to date; it is the only ski resort in Europe with its own underground railway system linking hotels to the ski lifts.

This uses Maglev technology to levitate on a cushion of air and helps keep the village centre virtually car-free. The resort attracts lots of well-heeled guests as it has a good selection of four star hotels and two five star establishments.

The ski area above is one of the best in Austria with 185km (116 miles) of linked runs above Serfaus and the neighbouring lift-linked villages of Fiss-Ladis. The ski runs ascend to a snowsure 2,800m, opening up a world class vertical of 1,600m.

More than 50 lifts, most of them very modern, are fast queue-gobblers, meaning you hardly ever have to wait to get up the long runs, and instead spend most of your day heading down the slopes.
  • Skiing for Beginners+

For beginners there are wide pistes on the plateau above the village with plenty of space. The ski school is of a very high standard and, once you have mastered your basic technique for turning and stopping, there are also a number of longer, wide, gentle, easy blues on which to progress.
  • Intermediate Skiing+

There are more than 50 red runs in the area, making up nearly two-thirds of all the terrain, and pistes are up to ten kilometres (seven miles) long.

The resort also has a strong reputation for the quality of its piste preparation and with the fast, efficient lift system, big vertical and good snow record, this is about as close as you can get to intermediate ski heaven.

The wide carving runs at Serfaus are perfect for long sweeping descents. The 'Lawensabfahrt' piste in particular provides carvers with lots of space for wide turns.

Night skiing is offered every Tuesday on Möseralmabfahrt and every Wednesday on Mittelabfahrt Komperdell.
  • Advanced+

The area has four blacks, including the fearsome Pezid Vertical which descends 1.4km (just under a mile) at pitches of up to 65% - hence its name.

The Schöngampbahn has its own racing run for you to measure yourself up against other skiers and boarders. A record of your speed is printed out at the finish line and you can compare your speed to others by going online.

There are also excellent off-piste areas to tour with a guide.
  • Snowboarding at Serfaus+

The ski area contains a fun park as well as a huge freeride area. The resort's new Funarena Boarderclub above Fiss-Ladis features a boardercross, wave run, music system and lines for both beginners and advanced boarders.

The park is located between the Plazör and Schöngamp runs and also features a rainbow rail and big kicker complete with air bag for happy landings. A second option closer to the resort is the Flight and Cross Park on the Plansegg along the Zanboden downhill run at Serfaus.

It is equipped with a rail park featuring different obstacles, mogul, easy rail line and medium rail line. The main park has three kicker lines (small, medium and large), medium boarder-cross and a chill-out area.
  • Other Activities And Facilities at Serfaus+

A unique attraction in the area not to be missed is the new Sky Swing which resembles a fixed hang glider, under which up to six people sit side by side hanging below on swings from wing tip to wing tip.

Located on the Möseralm you sit, fastened securely, whilst the 15 metre (50 feet) radius arm to which you are attached starts moving. The swing and its occupants then plunge down twelve metres (40 feet) in free fall at a speed of 65 km/h and four times the normal gravitational pull press the swing's passengers into their seats, only to hurl them high again on the other side.

Then at the other end the reverse effect - zero-gravity. The ride lasts for three thrilling minutes of hurtling up and down, alternating between 4G and floating, then back to Mother Earth. A ride costs €6.00 for adults and €5.00 for children.

Another unusual attraction is 'Fisser Flieger.' Again resembling a hang glider, this time you don a pilot's vest and, securely fastened to a cable, go flying off towards the valley, with up to three others along side you. Make sure to put on thick clothing, because at 80 kilometres per hour (50mph) you will feel the cold winter air blowing not only into your face but also into even the tiniest hole in your jacket. The 'Flieger' 'floats' at heights of between eight and 47 metres above the white slopes.

Back to more conventional ski area attractions and there are 146 kilometres of cross-country ski tracks and 10 kilometres of tobagganing runs in the area. At the Take-Off-Center at the Komperdell middle station in Serfaus you can deposit your skis or board and boots and borrow the latest fun sport equipment like Ski-Fox, Snake-Gliss, Snow-Shoes, Snow-Scooters and similar sliding objects.

There is no public swimming pool complex, but most of the four and five star hotels have their own excellent spa facilities.
  • Apres Ski And Dining Out+

There are more than a dozen bars and over 40 restaurants in and around Serfaus, bringing a good choice of establishments, ranging from pizzerias to gourmet.

Some of the lively après-ski bars are Hasenstadl, Patschi and Dorfschenke. An unusual attraction is a weekly laser show, the Tyrol's biggest, combined with an explosive mixture of acrobatics, stunts, music and pyrotechnics. This 'Adventure Night' is presented every Wednesday at 9pm at the mid station Komperdell Serfaus.
  • Ski Holidays in Serfaus suitable for Families+

With its pedestrianised centre, special shows and great family skiing, Serfaus is an excellent choice for somewhere to spend quality time together.

Murmlikrippe at the base of the slopes is a non-ski nursery facility for children from birth. Children can join ski classes from the age of three and the ski school also offers private tuition for younger children. The school even has its own cable-car exclusively for use of children in ski school (not parents!).

On the Komperdell you'll find the 'Kinderschneealm' children's ski kindergarten complete with easy-to-use magic carpet conveyor lifts, dinosaur land, fairytale village and children's restaurant.

Children will also enjoy the resort's new tubing park and mini ski-doo course at the Komperdell lift in Serfaus. Tubing involves sliding down a bumps course on a huge inner tube, the mini snowmobiles are for children up to 16 years of age.
