One of the world's most beautiful and spectacular ski areas, Saas Fee sits high in the Mischabel region of the Swiss Alps, surrounded by 13 four-thousand metre high peaks (one of them the country's highest, the 4545 metres high Dom) . Marketing itself as "the pearl of the Alps" the village was isolated for centuries until a road finally reached it in 1951. On that day the resort elders made the wise decision of banning car traffic from the resort so that today it remains a haven of peace from motor traffic with authentic Swiss chalets lining the narrow streets up to the base of the slopes.

The ski area itself is spectacular too and on a world-class scale. The Alpin Express cable-car takes you to the Felskinn Glacier, 3000 metres above sea level, which is open for summer skiing. The Metro Alpin, the world's highest underground funicular, lifts you still higher to 3500 metres where, apart from a huge vertical descending below you, you'll find the world's highest revolving restaurant! From here you can see as far as Milan on a clear day.

The high altitude gives snow surety, but the resort is not as cold as it might be at a more northerly latitude, in fact Saas Fee lies almost as far south as the northern Mediterranean. As well as Saas Fee's skiing the local lift pass covers the lifts and runs of fellow Saas Valley resorts, smaller Saas Grund and Saas Almagell below.
  • Skiing for Beginners+

The ski school meets at Kalbermatten which has gentle, interesting terrain. The school offers special classes for beginners and also has an extensive range of private lessons available. The resort's altitude means that snow is more or less guaranteed at village level right through the season so the slopes should be easy to reach in December and April just as in mid-winter.
  • Intermediate Skiing+

Half of Saas Fee's terrain is intermediate standard and it is this level of skier who will enjoy the resort's skiing the most, with its huge lift-served vertical. There are three main ski areas, the Felskinn, the Plattjen and the Längfluh. The latter has some excellent long carving trails such as the glacier piste. The upper section of Felskinn has relatively easy runs becoming steeper lower down with runs Hinterallalin and Egginerjoch.
  • Advanced+

Saas Fee has a lot to offer experienced skiers with tough trails, famous off piste descents, ski touring and heliskiing. The FIS sanctioned piste on Plattjen has hosted great racers such as Alberto Tomba, Pirmin Zurbriggen and Ingemar Stenmark. From Langfluh, if you follow the Fee-Chatz route at the Panoramaplaytz, you'll reach the sector's most challenging terrain. On Spielboden the White Pearl run is famous for its unpisted moguls. It descends on the right side of the Langfluh chair.
  • Snowboarding at Saas Fee+

Saas Fee operates both the giant Freestyle Park at Morenia and a beginner park at the Stafelwald and a third option for freestylers is the Freestyle Park down at neighbouring Saas Grund. In addition to the Swiss Ski and snowboard school, Saas Fee is one of the few resorts to still have a dedicated, boarders only school - Eskimos. Saas Fee's Allalin snow park has built a reputation as one of the continent's best, and is also one of the few in the world to be open in summer.
  • Other Activities And Facilities at Saas Fee+

Saas Fee has a modern sports centre with swimming pool and spa (many of the hotels also have pools and spas which may be open to the public). There's an ice rink and several museums. Other facilities include several banks, cash tills and a post office.

In the ski area the spectacular ice pavilion carved in to the glacier is the world's largest and includes a Pingu area for children and an ice chapel for weddings. You can also walk out on 60km of prepared winter hiking trails or 32km of cross country tracks with eight kilometres for the skating style of cross country skiing. There are two sledding runs, floodlit for night time fun, one of them 11km long making it the longest in Europe. Snowmobiling is also available along with sleigh rides and dog sledding. Another option is to swing on ropes on a course through a frozen gorge. There are also ice climbing options. The 'Feeblitz' is a 900m long, year-round, fixed toboggan run more like a roller coaster, where you sit in a car with a back rest and descend a route that incorporates a 360 degree turn nine metres (30 feet) above the ground.
  • Apres Ski And Dining Out+

Saas Fee has more than 60 bars and restaurants and is often lively. There are also three night clubs which offer dancing right through the night. Popular venues include the Happy Bar and the Metropol Crazy Night Life.

Most dining options are available from pizza to gourmet, including Chinese, Japanese and Thai amongst the dozens of traditional Alpine restaurants.
  • Ski Holidays in Saas Fee suitable for Families+

Saas Fee's wonderful atmosphere and lack of cars make it a great choice for a quality family holiday. The Marmot's Club will care for children aged a month old to six years and in addition several hotels provide their own childcare facilities. You can also get a list of baby sitters from the tourist office.

Children aged four and older can join special classes organised by the Swiss Ski and Snowboard School in resort. They have a special warm building to play in when off the slopes, and a special ski area with its own ski lift for lessons. Older children can win medals in the weekly ski race and take the Swiss ability level tests. They also receive admission to a special children's disco.
