Perhaps best known as the exclusive hide away of the British Royal family, Klosters is of course open to all. It is also linked to the equally famous town of Davos, via the Parsaeen and Gotschna ski area, creating one of the largest ski regions in Switzerland, complete with some of the country's (and therefore the world's) most exciting skiing, spread across seven separate ski areas, some lift-linked to one another, others not. In addition to the large area linked to Davos, Klosters has its own ski area of Madrisa.

The resort is, in fact, quite a large village, made up predominantly of large, Swiss chalet buildings of the type you always visualise as forming the architectural style of Swiss ski resorts. In Klosters' case, the original Walser inhabitants of the valley built their homes from the local Arvenholz Alpine pine tree, and many of the older buildings still exist today.

Klosters is divided in to two main centres, the larger part at 1194m, with a cable car heading up a thousand vertical metres to Gotschnagrat, and to Klosters Dorf, a little higher up the valley, from which a gondola runs up to the Madrisa slopes; a ski bus links the two.
  • Skiing for Beginners+

There are beginner drag lifts right in Klosters main village, but many lessons take place on Madrisa, where there are nursery slopes and a dedicated beginners' area at the top of the gondola. Group lessons are available but private lessons are popular. There are good progression slopes on Madrisa too, that beginners can move on to, once they've mastered the beginner runs.
  • Intermediate Skiing+

One of the world's best destinations for intermediates. The immediate choice is between Madrisa or Gotschnagrat, both of which offer a plethora of red graded terrain. In the case of Madrisa, virtually all of these slopes cut across the big open powder fields above the treeline.

Gotschnagrat offers more of the same, but with the option of some wonderful long reds down the full thousand metre vertical of the cable car, or from the mid-station, in either case on classic pistes cut down through the forest.

Alternatively, a second cable car from the top to Weissfluhjoch takes you to the top of the heart of the Parsenn, with runs down to Davos below.
  • Advanced+

Klosters is one of the leading resorts in the world for advanced skiers. One of the mountain guiding schools will be happy to lead you to the hidden powder stashes or take you high mountain touring. There are also several long marked but ungroomed runs on Jakobshorn and Madrisa.

In winter 2006-7 the Pischa sector became one of Switzerland's largest freeride regions. There are three runs that are made safe but left ungroomed, and two groomed trails and an established racing run. Day trips to St. Moritz are relatively easy with a rail link between the two.
  • Snowboarding at Klosters+

The Davos Klosters region has a reputation as one of the leading snowboarding resorts in the world. The Jakobshorn is the main centre for boarders and is home to the Sunrise Snowpark and a monster pipe, which is reshaped at least twice weekly. The park contains rails and boxes, kicker lines, rollers and a chill out area, and has its own ski lift.

There is a second pipe on Bolgen which is floodlit nightly. Closer to Klosters there are terrain park features on Madrisa and the advantage of easy uplift of thousands of metres by gondola and cable car to access the exciting freeriding terrain.
  • Other Activities And Facilities at Klosters+

Cross country skiers will find more than 40km of trails, about a third of which are open for skiers who want to bring their dogs along. Three kilometres (two miles) is illuminated for night skiing. There are 30km (19 miles) of cleared winter hiking trails in the valley and five kilometres (three miles) at altitude on Madrisa.

Snow shoeing is also popular and there are four toboggan runs around the resort. You can also try paragliding, enjoy a sleigh ride, try ice skating or curling and go horse riding.

There are three hotel swimming pools in the village that are open to the public, and public baths in Davos. Other indoor options include galleries, bowling alleys, a museum and a fitness centre with health spa. A guest card provided by your hotel provides discounts on some of these facilities and free use of bus services in the valley.
  • Apres Ski And Dining Out+

Klosters has a good choice of some 40 bars and restaurants and there is the additional option of small city-scale facilities in neighbouring Davos.

The dining options range from a plate of rosti in a simple friendly restaurant to haute cuisine such as trout in cider.
  • Ski Holidays in Klosters suitable for Families+

There are kindergarten facilities for children aged two and older and baby sitting services available for younger children as an alternative. Madrisa Kids'-Land is the main on-mountain facility with excellent equipment and caring staff for the youngsters.

Facilities include easy-to-use ski carousel and a magic carpet lift. It also includes a Mini Kids' Room which is open all day and can be used free of charge by children accompanied by their parents. Plus, there's an 80 seat kid's restaurant within a glass iglu called Randodrom and featuring a daily changing menu.
