Are (Sweden) Skiing Holidays

Sweden - AreResort Height: 380m

Åre is Sweden’s number one ski resort and deservedly so. It offers an excellent snow record from November to May and a superb ski area in a beautiful setting stretching 10km along Åre’s frozen lake. The unspoilt scenery is overwhelming, encompassing low sweeping mountains, pine clad forests and colourful homesteads dotted across the landscape. The resort consists of four accommodation bases and ski areas, all covered on the one lift pass. Åre and Årebjörnen ski areas are lift connected and a regular free ski bus provides a service between all the villages and ski areas. Each area is suited to different holiday needs and ski abilities that results in Åre attracting a diverse range of people including families, couples and younger groups. It’s not just the ski area and snow record that makes Åre so popular; visitors are welcomed with a genuine friendliness, high standards of accommodation and cuisine, and a huge choice of non-ski activities. Try it once and you’ll find yourself returning again and again.

The heart of Åre is a small, attractive square surrounded by a good choice of stylish and quirky shops, around 15 restaurants offering a range of dining options and a good choice of bars to suit every taste - whether it’s cocktails or lively bands. Åre’s nickname is ‘little Stockholm’ and it is most apt in and around the village centre where the atmosphere is relaxed and stylish with a funky edge. At weekends, the energy changes and Åre rocks with many bars offering lively ‘after-ski’. It’s lots of fun and would be enjoyed by couples, groups and families with older children. The skiing is ideally suited to intermediate and advanced skiers and riders and beginners are well catered for in the Rodkullen area, a 15 minute free ski bus ride away.

Årebjörnen is a peaceful village and ski area set amid snow laden forests and connected to the main Åre ski area by lift (approx 45 mins skiing time) and a free ski bus which runs regularly between 9am and 8pm (approx 10-15 min bus ride away). It is a winter wonderland for families with every aspect of the village and ski area designed with parents and children’s needs in mind. The network of wide, gentle slopes are never more than a stone’s throw away from the attractive cabins and apartments on offer.

The ski area itself has dedicated children’s lifts, several warming huts and a teddy ‘bear’ ski trail through the forest, while resort facilities include a supermarket, ski hire shop, restaurant and pub, all located at the base of the ski area in a central service building. This safe, quiet environment is the perfect place to introduce children of all ages to skiing and snowboarding.

Duved & Tegefjall - Situated at the opposite end of the ski area to Årebjörnen, Duved and Tegefjall are quiet accommodation bases with easy access to uncrowded slopes. Their ski areas are lift connected and both are served by the free ski bus that gives guests the opportunity to ski more terrain at Åre and Årebjörnen (15-20 mins ride to Åre village). They are great places to come to for a ‘get away from it all’ atmosphere but not one for party people.

Duved is a relaxed base close to peaceful, uncrowded slopes most suited to beginners and intermediates. The ski school provides excellent tuition on the nursery runs at the base of the slopes, plus there is a good choice of wide and well-groomed blue and red runs to progress to. There is also a terrain park located here and several kilometres of floodlit cross country trails starting just outside the Renen Hotel. The small village has a supermarket and a couple of bars and restaurants.

Tegefjall is a quiet, friendly base made up of small chalet style buildings at the base of uncrowded blue and red runs that intermediates will love. The ski school provides lessons here but complete beginners are taken to the nursery slopes in nearby Duved (served by the free ski bus). Facilities onsite include a small bar, small convenience store, reception and ski hire shop.

Beginners
For complete beginners we recommend the rolling slopes at Duved and the gentle runs at Årebjörnen for plenty of easy skiing and confidence building. All areas offer excellent ski school tuition with English-speaking instructors who instill confidence and encourage you to find your ski legs in no time at all. Beginners staying in Åre village will meet for ski school at the nursery slopes of Rodkullen, a 15 minute ride on the free ski bus. Beginners staying in Tegefjall will begin on the nursery slopes in Duved, a 5 minute bus ride away.

Intermediate
The east and south facing runs at Tegefjall offer long cruising descents, ideal for the intermediate skier and those of Mullfjallet in Duved are an intermediate skiers dream. For more of a challenge head to the Åre Centre ski area.

Advanced
There are a number of steep runs including the famous World Cup run. On the lower slopes the steepest pistes are in the Olympia area close to Åre village. The resort also offers many challenging opportunities for off-piste skiing (with an official guide). Lessons in advanced techniques, heli-skiing and telemark skiing are available at special ski clinics and can be booked locally. Please note: the Åreskutan ski area (the higher lifts) does not open until early February.

Snowboarding
A popular resort for riders. The Duved ski area is especially good for beginner snowboarders. There are terrain parks with pipes, jumps and boarder-cross in Tegefjall, Rodkullen and Årebjörnen ski areas, some of which are floodlit in the evenings. To make the most of the area, boarders should be happy taking drag lifts and T bars - there are lots of them.

Children
The wide, gentle and uncrowded ski areas at Årebjornen and Duved are great for families. Årebjornen in particular, offers dedicated children’s lifts, warming huts, forest trails, a weekly programme of fun activities and a crèche facility for children aged 2-12 years. Here, English-speaking nannies supervise indoor and outdoor games and activities. Places can be booked locally or alternatively call 00 46 647 13486. Each ski school offers group lessons for children from 3 years – see ski pack panel for details. The Holiday Club in Åre village offershotel-run childcare for children aged from 0 years.
