Resort Height: 809m

Slovenia's leading ski resort, and the longest established, is located in the north west of the country, only a few kilometers from both the Italian and Austrian borders and on the edge of the Triglav National Park.

Kranjska Gora has built a reputation for its quality accommodation, which is mostly slopeside with just a "snow beach" to cross to reach the bottom of the slopes from many hotels. The resort is quite low by modern standards, as is the top height of the lifts, and snow cover is only really a relatively safe bet between January and March, although it is often fine in December or April.

Tourism originally developed in the local Zgornjesavska Valley before the arrival of winter sports, as the area was, and still is, considered a natural climatic health resort because of the soothing effects of the Alpine air and the high number of sunny days.

Today the resort's hotels feature modern swimming pools, whirlpools and wellness centres with Turkish baths, Finnish saunas, masseuses offering traditional or Thai massage and solarium and cosmetic services.

Beginners

There are four ski schools to choose from in Kranjska Gora region which also offer equipment rental in a package deal. More than thirty ski instructors offer ski courses of between one and six days, with two or three hours of lessons per day, and the option of private classes. The resort has two nursery slopes and four longer gentle runs on which to progress.

Intermediates

Intermediates will enjoy the classic ski runs on Mt. Vitranc and there are slopes down through the forest towards Podkoren. This should be enough to keep early intermediate level skiers occupied for a week. It's also possible to head to the nearby ski areas of Kobla and Vogel to extend further the choice of skiing available. And there is night skiing between 7pm and 10pm.

Advanced

There are four black runs at the resort and the most advanced skiers will want to try out the competition run in Podkoren, three kilometers (two miles) from the resort and the annual venue of the Alpine Skiing World Cup.

Ski touring is increasingly popular in the area, on unspoiled slopes above the Zgornjesavska Valley. Recreational skiers can choose anything from a gentle downhill run from the Karavanke summits to extreme descents down the ridge of the Julian Alps.

Ski mountaineering is available from Mojstrovka, Kotovo sedlo and under the face of the Kriška Mountain, or you can choose the Triglav ski mountaineering route, taking you from Kredarica to Krma or ski from the Karavanke summit of Dovška baba.

Snowboarding

There are no special facilities for boarders here, so the main interest is likely to be the chance of high value and high quality lessons for beginner and early intermediate snowboarders. There are natural hits along the sides of the piste that descends through the forest.

Other Activities and Facilities

On the snow alternatives include cross country skiing, tobogganing, ice climbing and snowmobiling.

Cross-country skiers will find about 40 kilometres of groomed trails through the surrounding Zgornjesavska valley past the source of the local Sava River and the famous ski jumping facilities at Planica, deep into the Tamar Valley and towards Gozd-Martuljek. You will also find well-kept cross-country tracks in Mojstrana.

There are several spa and wellness facilities open to non-residents in the resort's hotels. Gambling is also popular with the casino of Kranjska Gora offering a multitude of slot machines and gaming tables.

Après Ski and Dining Out

The resort has just over a dozen bars and restaurants. The Enka lounge bar endeavours to be both the cosiest and coolest in the village with over 40 coffees to choose from, plus a wide range of beers and cocktails. It's open to 11pm.

The Grand Hotel Prisank contains both the Tea House London and the Cocktail Club Manhattan. The Vopa Pub is open to 3am and has live music at weekends. The restaurants of the local Zgornjesavska Valley offer a rich selection of culinary specialties, and emphasis is given to traditional Slovene dishes.

The Pri Žerjavu Inn is one of several offering local specialities, but you can also find several pizzerias, and the Sang Hai offers something different in the area – a Chinese restaurant.

Families

There's no real nursery provision or ski kindergarten for Kranjska Gora as a whole, but many of the larger hotels have their own in-house childcare facilities as well as excellent leisure facilities such as indoor pools. The ski area is quite family friendly too and prices reasonable.
