Heavy Snow in North America – Resorts Extend Ski Seasons
Friday, March 27th, 2009
Resorts in Colorado, California and British Columbia are amongst those reporting heavy snowfalls in recent days in Western North America.
Copper Mountain reported 16 inches (40cm) of new snow this week, giving its snow depths a much needed boost ready for Easter.
Over in California there has been up to three feet (90cm) of new snow at North Lake Tahoe’s upper elevations this past week, making for 11 feet (3.3m) of the white stuff so far in the month of March, on top of 10 feet (3m) in February.
North of the border Whistler has reported more heavy snow but the snow is moving further inland with Revelstoke the latest to report 40cm (16 inches) of fresh powder overnight with more forecasted for the weekend. Recent snow fall has left huge pockets of deep powder and blankets of over 14cm (six inches) across mid-mountain.
All the snow has led to Mt Bachelor in Oregon announcing they’re extending their season to mid-May. Other resorts that already offer skiing at least as late as that include Mammoth and Squaw Valley in California, Arapahoe Basin in Colorado, Snowbird in Utah, Whistler in British Columbia and Sunshine (Banff) in Alberta.
