Heavy Snow in New England
Monday, December 21st, 2009
Ski areas in New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and New York State as well as areas in more southerly states like New Jersey are benefitting from a storm system that is bringing lots of snow to Eastern North America. This is coming on top of healthy accumulations over the past week and is perfect timing for the busy Christmas and New Year holiday periods.
The storm has hit the south of the region first, bringing travel chaos to East Coast cities, and is now tracking north past Boston in to the main ski country.
In New Hampshire Mount Washington now has 100% of its terrain open thanks to the Outback’s opening on the backside of the mountain last Wednesday. The resort had already received over a metre (3.3 feet) of snow between December 14th and 18th. The new snow allowed the resort to open the popular Outback area
In Vermont, Stowe has received more than a foot of snow in the past week And is expecting more from the current storm. It’s a similar picture at Sunday River in Maine to the north, which celebrates 50 years of operations this weekend.
More southerly resorts where the storm is easing are now waiting for the storm to end so that road access to them returns to normal too.
