Fresh Snow in North America
Wednesday, May 13th, 2009
There are still seven ski areas open in North America, and most have received fresh snow over the past weeks.
Sunshine near Banff in Alberta will wind up the Canadian Rockies’ longest season stretching from November to May with the 81st annual Slush Cup party, taking place this weekend.
The festivities starts May 16th and ends on the 18th, Canada’s Victoria Day. It features live performances by BC/DC, fun competitions, the Molson Beer Gardens, and of course, the Coors Light Snow Bunnies.
Competition participants are encouraged to dress in creative and original costumes, along with the skill to clear the chilly, slushy pond, will have a chance to win some great prizes in categories including Awesome Air, Best Belly Flop and Excellent Enema.
Each year, thousands of people rally in the village to cheer on crazy individuals in their pursuit to clear the frigid waters on their skis or snowboard. All concerts are free with the purchase of a lift or gondola pass, or a season or spring pass.
Sunshine Village ski and snowboard resort receives more than 30 feet (nine metres) of natural snow annually and boasts 12 lifts. Each year, Sunshine attracts more than 500,000 skiers and boarders during the season.
South of the border there was fresh snow at Mammoth in California, Arapahoe Basin in Colorado and Mt Bachelor and Timberline in Oregon. A fifth option is Snowbird in Utah, which is currently open for snow sports from Friday to Sunday every weekend.
