Breckenridge Returns To On-Mountain Teaching Priority
Thursday, September 24th, 2009
In a calculated move, Breckenridge resort in Colorado has decided to return to the traditional method of teaching children to ski on the mountain.
This marks a departure from the more recent trend of building children an often fenced-in and artificially secure learning area at the base of the slopes and teaching in that more controlled environment. Thast trend really began in North America and has been increasingly adopted by larger ski areas in Europe..
The new programme at Breckenridge has been christened the ‘Kids Mountains of Discovery’ scheme aims to encourage exploring while learning.
“Combining elements of passion and creativity, instructors are able to teach the fundamentals of the traditional ski and ride school while building a sense of passion for the sport.†said a resort statement.
“ This differs from the conventional method that uses a very specific lesson plan that is taught in a designated teaching area or run for teaching all levels of kids.â€
The list of goals set for children taking part in the new programme changes with each level and is designed to teach skills in a way that conveys the adventure to be had with snow sports.
