Zermatt’s Freeride Area Expands
Saturday, December 13th, 2008
Zermatt, Europe’s highest ski area and one of only two in the world open 365 days a year, has expanded is freeride terrain on the slopes of Stockhorn.
Zermatt has had a spectacular snowy start to the season and snow depths are up to around three metres (10 feet) at the top already and over 100km (70 miles) of ski runs are open including the cross-border ski link to Cervinia in Italy.
Freeriders can now access a restored mountain station at an altitude of 3405 metres on Stockhorn, thanks to a new ski lift.
To the rear, the Dufourspitze, the highest peak in Switzerland. In one fell swoop freeriders can congregate to conquer the area, which Zermatt’s lift company has made accessible once again after the closure of the Hohtälli-Stockhorn cable railway, thus giving experts the perfect slope in the Triftji/Stockhorn area.
With the new lift, the free ride area from Hohtälli or Rote Nase is completely accessible again.
