Swiss Ski Resort Saves Snow
Monday, June 23rd, 2008

A ski resort in Switzerland has been looking at ways in which it can prevent its snow from melting.
The Ski Club of Great Britain reports that Laax has been engaging in a technique called "snow farming" which aims to reduce the amount of snow made by artificial means.
Snow Farming works by storing snow in a half pipe before covering it with a compound cover.
This allowed snow parks to be built earlier on in the season, the Ski Club notes.
Compound cover was used last year to cover a 20 hectare area of glacial piste for summer skiing and meant that piste machine hours were reduced by roughly 40 per cent.
Laax Falera ski resort is situated 90 minutes drive from Zurich and has an altitude that ranges between 1,100 and 3,018 metres above sea level.
The Swiss resort claims to have "some of the best guaranteed snow conditions in Europe".
