Saturday, October 25th, 2008
Villars has an excellent ski area which extends to Gryon and on to Diablerets, with the snowsure Glacier 3000 area above, but this winter the famous resort is laying added emphasis on its range of entertainments once the ski lifts close for the evening.
This winter, from, February onwards, these tranquil snowy slopes will be vibrant with life courtesy of the new all singing, all dancing, Villars Night Show every Wednesday.
This is a specially choreographed feast of laser and fireworks show, live music and what the resort describes as, “eccentric stage performances where art meets sport”, in what is designed to be an exhilarating pyrotechnic extravaganza after dark.
In addition, every week during high season, ski schools and altitude restaurants organise evening cheese parties, torchlit downhills (thanks to the funicular railway, non skiers are welcome), historic ski demonstrations, ice-hockey matches, slalom ski races for the public and last but not least, free welcome gluhwein and lumber-jack tea offered to all new visitors in the high street.
Every month there are astronomical star gazing parties and in Barboleuse, ice skating and curling on the ice rink, while in Cergnement tobogganing, dog-sledding, cheese evenings and over night stays in real igloos will be organised.
Villars also has a range of special events planned through the season including a traditional Christmas Market and an Ice Figure Skating Festival with world class stars in December. On New Year’s Eve the resort’s renowned firework display will light up the skies once again.
In January there’s a Full Moon Party with torchlit skiing as well as the famous Grand Prix BCV24Hours of Villars, an exciting charity fund raiser where teams of sponsored amateur ski racers compete over 24 hours with a full party scene continuing around the event, including live concerts on the mountain.
