Avalanche Risk In Switzerland
Wednesday, March 14th, 2007
British travellers heading to Switzerland for a ski holiday are being urged to exercise caution in the mountains, it has been revealed.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is currently advising that travellers have "comprehensive travel and medical insurance" before visiting the country in light of avalanche warnings.
Furthermore, it notes that there is currently a severe danger of avalanches in Switzerland’s Alpine regions.
"Please exercise due care and attention and observe all written notices and warning instructions," a notice on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website reads.
Major Swiss skiing resorts include Zermatt, Verbier, St Moritz and Engelberg and weather conditions were recently reported to be sunny and "excellent" according to the Ski Club of Great Britain.
However, in recent weeks a number of skiers have been caught up in avalanches in the region, leading to commentators recommending that skiers stick to groomed runs and avoid going off piste.
