More Ski Areas Open Early On Each Side Of The Atlantic
Monday, November 3rd, 2008
Mammoth Mountain in California and Bormio in Italy have both opened early for winter 2008-9.
Mammoth Mountain opens today (November 3rd) after snow storms deposited 18 inches (45cm) of fresh powder on the resort, which is famous for its long ski season, which often lasts through to the American Independence Day in July. The resort’s opening was 10 days earlier than planned.
Killington in Vermont also opened and Colorado resorts Breckenridge, Copper Mountain and Keystone.
Bormio opened at the weekend following a huge snowfall which snow reporting service wwwSkiinfo.com reported that 70cm (two feet, four inches) at the top of the mountain on Halloween last Friday. The resort’s opening was a full month ahead of schedule.
Skiers enjoyed fantastic powder skiing on upper slopes, where about two miles of intermediate level slopes were open. Bormio joins ski areas with glaciers in the Alps like Gstaad, Engelberg, Tignes, Saas Fee, Zermatt and Hintertux that are already open. Scandinavian resorts Geilo and Hemsedal in Norway are also opening this week.
Skiers travelling with British tour operators to resorts across the Alps and North America pre-Christmas next month look increasingly well placed to enjoy a classic season right from the start of the winter.
