Centenary of Ski Racing Celebrated In Selva
Tuesday, January 27th, 2009
2009 marks 100 years since the first ever recorded ski race was staged in the Dolomites, and Val Gardena won’t let the anniversary pass without a little celebration.
Visitors in the resort on the anniversary date, Sunday February 15th, can watch out for racers dressed in period costume and using old wooden skis from the era, competing in a recreation on the original race.
After the centenary celebration has been staged, it’s back to more modern events and on March 6, the gruelling nocturnal ski-touring Sella Ronda Ski Marathon takes place.
This tough race sees teams of two tackling the 42km (27 mile) course which connects the main towns of the four Ladin valleys – Corvara, Arabba, Canazei and Selva – via the four Dolomite passes of Gardena, Campolongo, Pordoi and Sella. The total vertical drop of this unique race is more than 2,700 metres.
