Portillo Ski Season Starts Early
Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

A spell of heavy snow in parts of Chile has proved to be good news for winter sports enthusiasts in the town of Portillo.
The exclusive ski resort is said to have received around 180 centimetres of snow in the past few days, including 95 centimetres in a single day earlier this week, reports the Ski Club of Great Britain.
As a result of the weather conditions, the official opening of Portillo’s ski season has been brought forward by seven days to June 14th.
Portillo has hotel accommodation for just 450 guests – and those who do manage to book will find the skiing on offer to be of the highest quality, with the resort used as a training headquarters for both the US and Austrian national teams.
Ski and Board magazine’s editor Arnie Wilson said that although the resort has a high profile in the US, it still manages to retain its small town feel.
"Portillo is very intimate, the people you see on the slopes will be the people you sit down to dinner with in the evening," said Mr Wilson.
