New Study Backs Up Crans Montana’s Sunshine Claim
Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009
A new study of the weather at Crans Montana in Switzerland has confirmed the resort’s long-held claim that it is one of the sunniest spots in the Alps.
The study carried out this autumn has looked back at records for the past 20 years and found that the famous resort has seen sunshine on at least 90% of the days of the year, every year.
Perhaps more surprising findings include the fact that Crans Montana receives as much sunshine in winter as in summer.
It also revealed that towns and villages in the valley below the resort received less sunshine.
The authors of the study estimate that sunshine hours over the period of a year total 30% more than the average for towns in Northern Europe.
Less positive findings for skiers and boarders were that precipitation is lower than the average, and having south facing slopes is good for sunbathing but less son for snow quality. However Crans Montana’s high altitude ski are which extends up to a glacier at 3,000m, does help to ensure a good ski season most winters.
