Heavy Snow In The Spanish Pyrenees
Tuesday, November 10th, 2009
Spain’s two largest ski areas of Baqueira Beret and Formigal, both located in the Pyrenees mountains which separate the country from France, with Andorra sandwiched between, have reported heavy snowfall over the past 48 hours and say they will now open ‘shortly’ – hinting at an early opening as a result of all the snow (scheduled opening dates are nearly three weeks away).
It’s the latest of the world’s major mountain ranges to report heavy snow – the Alps, Dolomites and Rockies have all seen up to 1.5m (five feet) of snow blanket them in recent days and weeks, great news for the up coming winter.
Baqueria Beret announced a metre of snow falling at the top of the ski slopes at 2,500m, with 45cm (18 inches) of snow in resort.
Formigal announced it is getting ready to open shortly after heavy snowfalls over the Pyrenees. Temperatures have dropped, snow has been falling for the past few days and Spain’s largest winter resort now has depths of nearly a metre at 1,900m and 35cm at village level (1,500m).
Commercial manager for Formigal, Jose Luis del Valle, said: “This is great news, we should be able to open very soon. And with our great offers like free ski hire and free lift passes for kids, a holiday to Formigal won’t break the bank.â€
