Ski-enthusiasts Advised To Ski Now
Friday, January 12th, 2007
Skiers have been advised to indulge in their hobby sooner rather than later and "ski now", as climatologists fear that global warming will reduce the length of the ski-season.
Researchers at the University of Colorado have warned that by 2100, climate change could decrease the Utah ski season to two months a year.
Furthermore, carbon emissions could affect the quality of the snow according to researcher Brian Lazar.
"As we reduce the amount of greenhouse gases, we can reduce the effects that we see," commented Mr Lazar.
"The more we control emissions as a planet, the more snow we’ll see."
However, not all ski resorts are yet suffering from the effect of carbon emissions.
In the higher European resorts such as Tignes and Verbiers, snow conditions are reportedly good.
Also, CBC News reported that ski resort Whistler Blackcomb has seen a record amount of snow.
Since the beginning of the ski season, it claims that the Canadian region has seen 877 centimetres of snow, over half a metre more than the record set in the 1991-92 season.
