Mountain Rescue Service Issues Advice To Bulgarias Skiers
Monday, January 29th, 2007
The Bulgarian Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) has issued warnings to holidaymakers currently visiting the country’s ski resorts.
Skiers are being advised to stick to groomed ski runs and marked winter paths after Focus reported that a series of avalanches had fallen near the ski resort of Bansko.
The news agency revealed that two avalanches fell in the area around the Todorka Peak, with the second slide injuring a boy and a girl.
Furthermore, it reported that the avalanches were caused by people snowboarding on non-maintained ski runs
According to the Sofia Echo, the MRS believes that the danger of avalanches in Bulgarian ski resorts will continue until the majority of the cascades fall naturally.
The MRS noted that Bansko pistes are all groomed and that equipment is working properly.
Bansko is 160 metres from Sofia and is 925 metres above sea level.
Latest weather reports from the region indicate snowfall for Tuesday January 30th.
