Wednesday, January 14th, 2009
Alpe d’huez is offering visitors the chance to ski down the legendary Sarenne black run by moonlight.
The unforgettable experience begins with an ascent to the summit of the “Grand Pic†on the last lift of the day where youʼll enjoy panoramic views over Mont Blanc, le Mont Ventoux, le Massif Central, Italy and Switzerland at sunset.
Skiers and boarders will then enjoy a hearty meal in a mountain hut, right in the heart of the Sarenne Glacier before embarking on the 16km (10 mile) descent back to Huez.
The excursion is accompanied by qualified instructors and first-aiders and is available on 8th and 9th February and 9th and 11th March.
Alternatively the descent can be made with headlamps on 11th, 18th and 25th February or 4th, 18th and 25th March. In either case the event is off course weather dependant.
The Sarenne was first skied in 1962 as an off-piste route and first groomed in 1977/78. It descent 1,830 vertical metres from a start altitude of 3,330m down to its end at 1500m at the Pont du Gua. It takes good skiers 30 minutes to descend, on average, whilst the less experienced may take an hour.
