Les Arcs Builds Europe’s Largest Artificial Lake
Sunday, February 8th, 2009
The new artificial lake of l’Adret des Tuffes above Les Arcs holds enough water to supply the entire huge snowmaking requirements of the ski area – one of Europe’s largest with more than 200-km (125 miles) of runs.
The new lake fills with melted snow meaning that snowmaking is fed by melt water rather than needing to take water from natural lakes and rivers.
New ski tows and snowmaking equipment have been installed on the Maitaz and Plan Bois ski runs, guaranteeing great snow on the Arc 1800 – Peisey-Vallandry link which in turn connects via the Vanoise Express to La Plagne in the great Paradiski region.
A new snow plant built in the same area replaces two older units and centralises the supply of water and compressed air for the entire artificial snow network.
So far the new snowmaking capacity has not actually been needed to be used much as Les Arcs is enjoying a superb snow season in 2008-9 to date.
