Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

The popular French ski holiday resort of Chamonix has been rewarded for its environmental efforts.
Following eight months of toil the region’s tourist office was awarded the ISO 14001 environmental standard towards which it had been working.
Chamonix now joins Megeve in an elite club of ski resorts to possess the standard, which ascertains its use of an environmental management system.
"We hope that, with the current movement towards sustainable development, our actions today will also be sustainable and that in a few years time we will have a comprehensive eco-tourism product in the Pays du Mont Blanc," a resort spokesperson told Snowboard Club UK.
In order to be accolade with the ISO 14001 standard - which assures that environmental standards conform with environmental laws and regulations – Chamonix Tourist Office’s environmental impact was examined.
Following the news of the resort’s achievement of its environmental goal, Claire Burnet of the Office de Tourisme de Chamonix told the Ski Club of Great Britain that more work is still needed.
She described the standard as a benchmark and noted that Megeve and Chamonix now needed to work together to improve environmental standards in the region.
