France Snowed Under Ahead Of February Holidays
Friday, January 22nd, 2010
Ski resorts in France are mostly in good shape ahead of the busy February holiday period when most schools in Europe have half-term weeks, and families from France and the UK in particular descend en masse on the country’s resorts.
Snowfalls of up to three feet in total over the past week have left many resorts with powder conditions. The snow has fallen right across the country although the Pyrenees have had the best falls of the past seven days, with most resorts receiving 2-3 feet (60-90cm) of snow. In the Alps most resorts have had 8-12 inches (20-30cm) more.
According to snow reporting agency www.Skiinfo.co.uk Chamonix has the most snow in the country with up to four metres (13.3 feet) accumulated on upper slopes, more than any other resort anywhere at present. Flaine has 275cm (9 feet), La Clusaz 260cm (8.7 feet).
Many tour operators are reporting that they are fully booked for the key weeks id mid and late-February and skiers who have not yet booked a February trip and try to secure flights or Eurotunnel tickets to travel independently are largely finding very limited availability and consequently high prices. There are still some deals to be had for the first full week, commencing February 6th, however, before the main French and British half-term holidays begin.
