Skier Breaks World Record
Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007
A world champion skier has made the record books by becoming the first person ever to ascend and ski from the summit of all 54 Colorado 14,000 ft peaks in under a year.
Chris Davenport, a professional free-skier, accomplished the feat on January 19 2007, having commenced the project on January 22 2006.
Previous record holder Lou Dawson is the only other man to have carried out the challenge, however, the task took him 12 years to complete.
Mr Davenport paid tribute to Mr Dawson after completing the exploit.
"I am relieved and overwhelmed to have worked so hard on this goal over the last year and to have actually pulled it off," he commented.
"Mother nature deserves the most thanks, as these peaks would never be skiable without the ample snow and good weather that we had."
Upon hearing the news, Mr Dawson told the Summit Daily Press that he was "stunned and amazed" due to the fact that climbing and skiing the mountain range was supremely challenging.
Mr Davenport is planning to write a book on the subject, detailing his experiences.
