Bad Weather Threatens Alpine World Skiing Championships
Friday, February 2nd, 2007
Adverse weather is threatening to delay this year’s Alpine World Skiing Championships.
The event, which is being held at Are in Sweden, is due to open with the men’s super-G this Saturday, but could be held up by strong winds.
However, organisers are insisting that the competition will not be cancelled because of the disruptions.
"There is no reason to panic or start thinking about rescheduling," International Ski Federation president Gian Franco Kasper commented.
He added that he was aware of the weather forecast and claimed that if the race was delayed by an hour it would not make much impact on the proceedings.
The alpine skiing world cup season has been dogged with delays so far this year due to mild weather.
Nonetheless, Are is one of few European ski resorts to have benefited from a good snowfall this year, according to the Associated Press.
Mr Kasper noted that the ski resort has plenty of snow and that its pistes are in excellent condition.
