White Weekend At Whistler

Whistler has been enjoying big snowfalls all weekend, and it’s still falling according to the Canadian resort’s first reports at 5.44am this morning.

26cm (10 inches) is reported to have fallen in the past 24 hours, but that’s part of an on-going trend with 42cm (16 inches) in the past 48 hours and and Whistler now has a huge 210cm (seven feet) base at mid-mountain.

Another 5 to 10cm (2-4 inches) in snow flurries are expected today with temperatures of -7 to -10 Celcius, and the freezing level at the valley bottom.

Resort grooming staff recommend the Orange Peel or Harmony runs on Whistler mountain and Jersey Cream or Zig Zag on Blackcomb mountain.

The snowy weather all bodes well for the remainder of the season. The resort is just completing the staging of a series of world Cup and similar events in multiple disciplines as ‘dry runs’ for the 2010 Olympics to be staged here in less than a year’s time.

But the 2008-9 season is still under way and the major annual World Ski and Snowboard Festival kicks off next month (April) with Whistler’s glacier ski season following on in May and continuing through in to summer, the longest ski season of any major North American ski resort.
