Snow in Whistler
Monday, December 8th, 2008
Most of the northern hemisphere has had fantastic snowfall this autumn, particularly the Alps, Dolomites and Pyrenees in Europe and more recently the Rockies in Colorado and Alberta.
However the western coast of North America has been the one region that hasn’t done so well so far this season with ski areas in California and British Columbia struggling to get a few runs open due to warm and wet conditions and other resorts deciding to delay opening until conditions improve.
The good news however is that nine centimetres (Four inches) of snow fell on Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains on Saturday night (December 6) and another four centimetres (two inches) fell during the day yesterday (Sunday December 7).
In combination with snow guns turning over nine million gallons of water into snow over the last week, the early season conditions at Whistler Blackcomb are rapidly improving.
The resort’s already famous $52m PEAK 2 PEAK gondola – which will have the furthest span between support towers and be the highest suspended lift above a valley floor – will have its Grand Opening this Friday, December 12.
