New Lift for Banff As Skiing Area Turns 85

Banff’s local ski hill of Mt Norquay turns 85 this winter and has many great events planned throughout the season.

Work on the ski area broke ground in 1926, followed by the construction of the ski lodge in 1928. Rope tows followed in 1942 and history was soon made when the mountain installed the area’s first chair lift in 1948, one of the first in Canada.
At a second of Banff’s three ski areas, Sunshine (the third area is Lake Louise), a new Dopplemayr quad chairlift is currently being installed to replace the Strawberry triple chair, which at 35 years old, has reached the end of its service life.
The ‘new’ quad has actually been brought over from Whistler where it was originally used in the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Now, in addition to preserving the Olympic legacy for the local community it will improve the ski and snowboard experience for beginners, offering even more comfortable and convenient access to easy green and intermediate blue runs.
