New At Fernie
Tuesday, October 21st, 2008
After clocking up 37 feet (11.2 metres) of powder snow last winter, Fernie in British Columbia is looking ahead to the coming season when it will offer new lines and a new piste to its guests.
Through the summer the resort has been working to add more tree skiing with glading projects included KC Chutes, Cedar Ridge, Currie Glades and Stagleap and with more lines being cut in Mitchy Chutes.A whole new piste has also been added, Fernie’s 113th run, called “Cougar Glades”.
It is located skier’s right of Stagleap. And to prove it’s sometimes the little things that count on a ski trip, new galvanized haul rope has been installed on the Deer and Elk Chairs, which should go a long way in reducing the grease stains that appear below the lift towers and have, in the past, sometimes dripped on to clothing.
Another essential – a new bathroom – will be installed at the bottom of the Haul Back lift.
More of Fernie’s famous powder should be available sooner each day too thanks to the installation of a new safety system. This will allow the resort’s Safety team the ability to get into key terrain to conduct control work on a more regular and safe basis.
For skiers and boarders, it means more terrain open sooner on those heavy snowfall days. Two avalanche status boards will be added on the mountain to keep skiers well informed of open/closed areas on powder days.
