Fresh Snow As Lake Louise Prepares To Open At Weekend
Wednesday, November 5th, 2008
Fresh snow has blanketed the Banff area of Alberta, Canada, where the area’s three ski areas are preparing to open in the coming days and weeks.
First to turn on the ski lifts will be Lake Louise which has set a tentative opening date of this Saturday, November 8th. The fresh snow in the past 24 hours has helped further build its base.
Lake Louise is further boosting the natural snow with superior snowmaking technology. This season’s opening will see the debut of the new Ptarmigan Lift at the resort, providing lower energy consumption and greater comfort.
Sunshine Village also received more snow over the last 24 hours and has announced plans to open a few days after Lake Louise, next Tuesday, November 11th.
With most of Sunshine Village’s terrain above 7,000 feet, they have no need for snowmaking, and began their high speed gondola operations for the winter yesterday to aid staff in preparations.
Mt. Norquay, the closest centre to Banff itself, will open on December 5th at Mt. Norquay which has also invested in extensive snowmaking.
Banff-Lake Louise is renowned for having one of the longest ski seasons in North America, from mid-November to late May, with almost 8,000 acres of skiable terrain and over 30 feet of dry and fluffy snow, in scenery so spectacular the United Nations has designated it a World Heritage Site.
