Monday, December 17th, 2007

The opening of the 2008-09 ski season in Bansko did not disappoint avid snowsports fans, after it was accompanied by a heavy snowfall, Visit Bulgaria reports.
As well as hosting a number of top end ski competitions during the winter, those taking skiing holidays in Bansko can look forward to experiencing 70 kilometres of ski runs as well as a top quality apres ski in the resort’s bars and restaurants.
The opening ceremony saw ski and snowboard instructors demonstrate their prowess on the Alberto Tomba piste, while four-time Olympic medal winner Kjetil Andre Aamodt performed a downhill spectacle for viewers, stopping abruptly at the bottom and showering the audience in snow.
"You have created a world-class resort in a very short time. It is pleasure for me to be here and be a part of this great show," the ski champ commented.
Olympic ski champion Janica Kostelic and ski "legend" Marc Girardelli were also on hand to support the Bulgarian ski resort.
Meanwhile, the Sofia Echo reports that mountaineer Reinhold Messner was also at the opening.
