“The White Thrill” In St Anton
Monday, April 13th, 2009
One of the most exciting races in the ski calendar takes place on 25th April on the slopes above St Anton in Austria.
“Der Weiße Rausch – The White Thrill” ski race is a cult event which every year attracts hundreds of skiers from all around the world to compete in one of the longest races in the world as the resort celebrates the end of its long season.
Skiers, snowboarders and telemarkers meet at 2,650 metres altitude for the mass start and race from the Vallugagrat down to the valley.
The set-off is not until the afternoon and a nine kilometre long descent over 1,300 altitude metres faces the participants who must also overcome the demanding piste conditions.
Many of the competitors just do the race for fun and above all, the elation on reaching the end counts just as much as the great sporting achievement.
The season in St Anton finishes the next day but continues for a further week at St Christoph above.
