Summer Ski Areas Start To Open For 2010 Glacier Season
Wednesday, May 26th, 2010
Although you may not know it, winter 2009-10 is still underway at about 20 ski areas in 10 countries!
In Finland, Ruka ski area up in the north is continuing one of the world’s longest winters for a resort without a glacier – they opened last October and plan to still be skiing in June.
It’s not much different in California where Mammoth Mountain has announced it will stay open until the American Independence Day on July 4th.
Even closer to home Cairngorm Mountain above Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands is still open at weekends, having enjoyed its best season in living memory. Last week it received the heat wave the resort of the UK enjoyed with temperatures soaring to +20C and skiers and boarders out in shorts and kilts, but it’s now back to low single figures and has announced it will open again for the coming bank holiday weekend, including bank holiday Monday.
However as of next weekend the number of ski areas open worldwide will begin to climb again s three summer glacier ski areas open in Italy, Norway and Austria. The latter – the Dachstein glacier near Schladming – is perhaps the most significant as it has announced it will be offering an improved summer terrain park, adding new rails to its already world class facility.
Then we are in to June with more summer ski areas opening in the Alps throughout the month and the first of the southern hemisphere’s winter 2010 season resort openings too.
