Thursday, February 25th, 2010
The famous Austrian resort of St Anton am Arlberg will enfd ots 2009-10 season with the spectacular “White Thrill“ ski race on April 24th.
500 participants from all over the world meet at 2,650 metres above sea level for a mass start divided in to two groups.
Skiers, snowboarders or Telemark skiers whizz down from the Vallugagrat to the valley at break neck speeds. Halfway through the race it’s skis off for a 150 metre ascent in your ski boots, carrying your equipment, scaling 37 metres in altitude. Then at the top of the rise it’s skis on again and full speed ahead.
The nine kilometre run takes place in the afternoon under challenging piste conditions. The finishing line is always a welcome sight for all participants, and celebrations are held for having achieved this great sporting accomplishment.
For participants and guests alike the preceding week is high on value, and hopefully high on sunshine. This last ski week of the season in St. Anton am Arlberg, from the 17th to 24th April, is known as ‘the Snow Crystal’ week. The lift pass costs 25 per cent less than the already very reasonable off season price and many hotels and accommodation providers are further reduced.
The winter season ends in St. Anton am Arlberg on the next day, 25th April.
