Thursday, November 13th, 2008
More of the world’s leading ski resorts are opening this weekend as heavy snowfall continues to bring above average conditions on both sides of the Atlantic.
In Canada Alberta is the place top be as two more resorts open – Sunshine near Banff opens today (November 14th) meaning all three Banff resorts are open as Lake Louise and Mount Norquay opened last weekend.
Marmot Basin in Canada opens tomorrow, Saturday 15th November, its earliest ever opening,
“We are very excited to be able to open so early in the season for skiers and riders. The snowmaking and grooming crews have done an outstanding job at getting Tranquilizer ready and the run will be in great shape on opening day “, says Brian Rode, Vice President of Marketing for the resort. “Tranquilizer” is the most popular intermediate run in the lower portion of the mountain and has a vertical drop of almost 1,000 feet.”
In Europe Obergurgl in Austria opens on Saturday, joining the half dozen Austrian glacier resorts already operating, with fresh snow bringing superb powder conditions. The glacier above Passo Tonale in Italy has opened with a huge base of more than 150cm.
Swiss resorts are similarly blessed with Saas Fee offering top-to-bottom skiing and Zermatt opening its connection to Cervinia in Italy earlier than ever. St Moritz and Verbier have also opened, joining Zermatt, Engelberg and the Diablerets glacier.
