Heavy Snowfall in Austria

Austria is expecting up to a metre of snow to fall on the country’s highest ski slopes over the next 72 hours (November 20 – 22). The country is now in full ‘ski mode’ ahead of the start of the season in many of the country’s leading ski areas over the next few weeks.

Snow reporting agency Skiinfo.com are predicting that snow will fall as low as 200m above sea level, meaning that even Austria’s lowest slopes will be covered.

Around 10 Austrian ski areas are already open, including the Stubai glacier near Innsbruck, the Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun and Zell am See and the Dachstein Glacier near Schladming. Obergurgl, one of the highest traditional villages in the Alps with skiing up to 3000m above opened last week, it’s neighbour the glacier resort of Solden had already opened in October and staged World cup ski races.

Among resorts due to open in the next week are Ischgl, which will stage its annual seasonal opening pop concert on Saturday
29th November, and the Arlberg region above Lech and St Anton which has special low season lift-ticket pricing during its first week of the season.

One of the biggest developments in Austria this year is the opening of the new gondola lift connection between Westendorf and the rest of the SkiWelt area which means that the lift-linking of two of Austria’s biggest ski areas – the SkiWelt to Kitzbuhel’s ski area, is more or less seemless. The result is one of the world’s five biggest ski areas with more than 400km (250 miles) of lift-linked terrain.
