City To Mountain Link Opened In Austria
Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

The Austrian ski area of Tirol has announced the opening of Europe’s first city-to-mountain transport.
A funicular and cable car have been combined to create a transport link from the city of Innsbruck to the mountains, perfect for anyone on a ski holiday in Austria.
The Nordkettenbahnen funicular connects to the cable car at the Hungerburg station, allowing skiers and snowboarders to go to altitudes in excess of 2,200 metres. The ride from top to bottom takes 20 minutes.
Designed by London-based architect Zaha Hadid, the funicular and cable car system - which "imitates nature" according to the designer - should allow easier access to the slopes for those on ski holidays.
Ms Hadid was the first woman to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize when she was presented with the award in 2004.
She has also designed an innovative s-shaped bridge across the area’s River Inn, which is supported by two 34-metre pylons.
