Big October Powder Snow Falls In Austria
Thursday, October 9th, 2008
The 2008-9 European ski holiday season has got off to a great start with massive snowfalls across the Alps, with Austria getting the most benefit, reporting up to 70cm (two feet, four inches) of snow this week at the Tux glacier, near Mayrhofen.
Tux is one of about 20 ski areas across Europe that are already open with the fresh snow on the glaciers providing powder heaven for those already heading out to enjoy the new snow.
Other centres open include Saas Fee and Zermatt in Switzerland, both of which are offering equipment testing through October and November, Tignes in France and the glaciers near Kaprun, Schladming and Innsbruck in Austria.
At Tux the resort opened its terrain park for the season with a big party.
“It really was a crazy to have so much snowfall at the beginning of October like in the deepest winter. With powder on the slopes, a park that was fun for both, freestyle nubies and top riders, free testing of the latest material and last but not least two big parties it was fantastic. We had not only a bit of everything, but a lot of everything - snow, fog, sun, pipe, park, powder, party and products. And all that at the beginning of October!” said resort spokeswoman Elisabeth Kröll.
