Igloo Villages Announce Innovations
Saturday, January 23rd, 2010
The popular igloo villages have opened at seven top resorts in Andorra, Germany and Switzerland this winter. It’s the 15th year for the company which grew from a ski instructor’s original idea, and as well as expanding dramatically from it’s early creations in the mid-1990s, has been copied by other resorts in the Alps.
The company operates igloo villages at Davos, Gstaad, Engelberg, St Moritz and Zermatt in Switzerland; Grandvalira in Andorra and Zugspitz above Gartmisch in Germany. The St Moritz village is new this year.
Most of the villages have igloos which can be booked for a night if you are visiting the resort on a regular package holiday, and most also offer lunchtime visits and evening meals as part of an ‘igloo experience’ without an overnight stay.
In Grandvalira, Andorra, the Igloo Village for this winter has been moved by 100 metres and is now also easy to reach on foot from a nearby chairlift. A new addition for 2010 is the kitchen which offers a diverse range of culinary delights. The restaurant also caters for non-igloo guests every Tuesday evening.
An international team comprised of locals, Argentineans, Chileans, Spanish, Dutch and Swiss are once again offering dog sledding, snowmobiling and snowshoeing attending but you must book ahead.
In Davos-Klosters The Igloo Village has a Jacuzzi for the first time this year while the Gstaad Igloo Village has been relocated to an elevated site on the Saanerslochgrat and now offers guests a magnificent view with even more sunshine. At Zermatt this year as well as the ice loo, the site will also have a conventional WC this season. A gourmet fondue is served every Tuesday evening.
