Heavy Snow In Europe
Wednesday, March 11th, 2009
All three major mountain chains in Europe have reported still more heavy snow in the past week, and in the Alps the snow is still falling.
According to snow-reporting service www.skiinfo.com snow depths have passed four metres for the first time this season in Austria, five metres in the French Pyrenees and at Europe’s most southerly resort, Sierra Nevada in Spain, and six metres in the Swiss Alps and at resorts in the Italian Dolomites.
Recent snow fall has included more than30cm (a foot) today (March 11) in St Anton, Austria and up to a metre of new snow in some resorts in France, Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland over the past seven days.
Although this bodes well for the coming Easter holiday period, it also means that the avalanche risk is currently very high, typically at level 4 (second to top category) across the Alps, with resort staff warning that it’s important to stay safe and stay on the piste when in resort.
