Do you really need a giant ski area? Smaller resorts you may not have heard of may actually be lovely, and their lift tickets can cost 50% less than the famous names. Book your skiing holiday early if you need to be sure of a particular hotel and look for early booking discounts. If you just need a double room, you could risk booking late and snap up late deals.

If you’re a beginner, look at the price of pre-booking learn-to-ski packages. At some resorts it costs over £400 for a week’s lesson, lift ticket and equipment rental, at others it’s nearer to £100 for the identical services.

Self drive holidays to apartments in France can still cost less than £100 per person for a week, but be sure to choose a smaller resort as the big French resorts are most expensive for lift tickets when you’re there.
