Voss Transfer Times+
| Bergen: | 0 minutes |
| Oslo: | 0 minutes |
Voss is a small town of 14,000 permanent residents on Norway's south west coast, sitting, between the famous fjords of Sognefjorden and Hardangerfjorden.
The resort has been a summer tourist destination for nearly two hundred years, attracting visitors from all over the world. It has maintained an unspoilt feel that makes it a very pleasant place to stay. The resort was once one of Britain's most popular ski destinations before the mass market ski industry took off in the 1970s, and its easy accessibility continues to be a major advantage. The Fleisher's Hotel, a luxury family-run establishment built in the 1880s, is a major landmark.
The local ski hill is reached by the Bavallen lift from the edge of town in a five minute ascent. It is quite low in common with most Scandinavian areas, where the latitude rather than the altitude is the main snow guarantee, but the resort has installed extensive snowmaking to top-up mother nature's contribution when required.
Voss was covered in ice until about 9000 years ago and was first discovered by prehistoric man about 3000 years ago. Remnants of the various inhabitants through the centuries are still visible including Olavskrossen - Olav´s Cross, a stone cross erected by Olav den Heilage - Olav the Holy - in 1023.

Beginners+
There's a new beginners' area at Bavallen in Grebbesbakken which includes a 50 metre-long ski carpet (conveyor belt), easy to get on and off, which provides a safe introduction to skiing for beginners.
The resort's Skiskule og Utleige (ski school and equipment hire) will guide you safely through everything you need to know to feel comfortable on skis. It operates at the upper terminus of the Hangursbanen cable car and in Bavallen, and is open every day. The ski school is one of the largest in Western Norway and it offers lessons in English.
-
Intermediates+
Intermediates will get the most from the prepared trails at Voss with 36km (23 miles) of the 40km (25 miles) of runs graded blue or red. Runs are up to four kilometres (two and a half miles) long and there are some great views out over the beautiful surrounding landscape.
Night skiing is available on Fridays.
-
Advanced+
The ski school offers summit ski touring and powder snow skiing with a guide, which will fill up the week for advanced skiers who are likely to grow tired of the three black trails covering two kilometres of piste. Runs down from the Floytesteinen and Stettafjell are amongst the more challenging.
Voss has hosted many FIS World Cup races and believes that more Winter Olympic participants have been trained here than at any other place in the world.
-
Snowboarding+
Snowboarders will find a dedicated terrain park and a big air bag on Slettafjellet. In recent years the ski area has added a big jump, half pipe and boardercross in the park and the powder fields are excellent for free riding when the snow is fresh.

Other Activities And Facilities+
Voss attracts visitors year round and winter sports are only a small part of what's on offer. Most of the things to do are outdoor and take in the cultural history or magnificent scenic beauty of the area.
Indoors, some hotels have swimming pools and there's the BioForm activity centre with bowling, squash and health club. There's a cinema too which stages all the latest films and a good selection of shops, including the Amfi shopping centre.
Winter activities include 20 km prepared cross-country trails. Snowshoe tours to Slettafjellet are organised when the lifts close each evening and ascend on marked trails and through the forest. Traditional stew and 'gløgg' (mulled wine) are served at Storastova, and finishes back at the equipment hire point in Bavallen where it begins. Tandem paragliding is another option.
Voss also offers cultural experiences including farm visits and visits to mountain crofts, concerts, events and festivals with themes ranging from music or sports to food, a number of local museums, folk dancing and folk music, as well as heritage attractions such as old buildings and ancient monuments of great historical importance. The old church in Voss, dating from the Middle Ages, is one of the most beautiful anywhere in Western Norway and is well worth a visit.
The town is also a base for a trip on the FlĂĄm Railway, one of the most beautiful railway lines in the world. The 20km train journey takes you through some of Norway's wildest and most magnificent scenery.
It is one of the worlds steepest railway lines on normal gauge with a gradient of one in eighteen on almost 80% of the line. The twisting tunnels that spiral in and out of the mountain are manifestations of the most daring and skilful engineering in Norwegian railway history.

Apres Ski And Dining Out+
Voss has a small selection of bars and a larger choice of restaurants, many of which reflect its strong cultural heritage. This being Norway, food and drink prices are high for international visitors, making half board a good idea for those on limited budgets.
Popular bars include Pianissimo in the Park Hotel Vossevangen and Fredriks Bar in Fleischers Hotel. On the mountain the Hangursrestauranten accessed by the Dinglo og Danglo lift is a popular venue. On busy weekends when the weather is good there's a barbecue out on the terrace, with good music and a great atmosphere. It's a great 'aprčs piste' venue.
Back in town several local restaurants and cafeterias are taking part in a project they've called "Vossameny" or "Voss menu." Showing a Vossameny logo in their windows, they offer a range of food based on products from local farmers and manufacturers.
There's also a good international mix of cuisine choices such as Alpino Pizzeria on Strandavegen or the China House on Hestavangen. The Vossevangen Pizza- og Tacobar is also on Strandavegen and provides a Mexican choice. The Vossevangen Grill og Steakhouse on Vangsgata is a carnivore haven. The best in town is probably the Restaurant Magdalene in Fleischer´s Hotel.
-
Families+
There's a non-ski nursery at the top of the cable-car for children aged two to six. Children aged five and up can join ski school to take lessons and the ski area itself makes a lot of effort with children and operates three areas on the mountain for children.
In winter 2008 a completely new area, Grebbesbakken at Bavallen was added. The facility has a 50 metre-long ski carpet (conveyor belt), which is ideal for the smallest ski enthusiasts, being easy to get on and off. It also provides a good and safe introduction to skiing for adult beginners.
There's another dedicated areas for kids at Slettafjellet. The Bavallstunet ski lift at Vetlebakken is ideal for children who have a bit of ski experience, but intrepid beginners will enjoy the challenge too. This slope is also open for evening skiing on Fridays.
Children aged under seven and wearing helmets get free lift tickets.
