"Friendly, safe and fun for beginners and families best describes the most recent addition to our Norwegian programme. As well as uncrowded, gentle slopes perfect for learning and improving, the ski resort of Beitostolen offers plenty of non-ski activities orientated towards the whole family."
Beitostolen is brand new to our Norwegian programme for Winter 2006/7. It lies on the edge of the beautiful Jotunheimen National Park, just 40km north west of Fagernes, which means a short transfer of just 45 minutes. It is a compact, friendly ski resort with a choice of accommodation situated around the ski base, literally metres away from the slopes and resort facilities. The ski area has an excellent snow record (from November to May) and offers gentle, uncrowded slopes ideally suited to beginners and families who’ll benefit from learning in a safe, confidence-buildingenvironment. There is a good choice of other winter activities such as dog sledding and snowmobiling on offer, plus organised family-orientated activities everyday from 3pm so even the smallest family members can experience more than just skiing or snowboarding.
Beginners
Beitostolen is absolutely perfect for beginner skiers and snowboarders. Its nursery slopes provide the ideal platform to learn from, under the close supervision from the excellent English-speaking ski school. All the gentle, beginner runs lead back to the ski base where ski school meets and the proximity of accommodation and resort facilities means little walking around in skis and boots.
Intermediate
It may not have a huge ski area but Beitostolen’s uncrowded slopes and virtually queue-free lift system mean intermediates can hone their skills non-stop. More confident intermediates will enjoy the more challenging slopes at the nearby ‘Alpine Centre’, (host to the World Telemark Championships in 2005), served by the ski bus three times a day.
Advanced
This area does not claim to provide testing terrain for advanced skiers and boarders but the Alpine Centre (15 min bus ride away) offers some off-piste opportunities through pine trees and down powder chutes.
Snowboarding
Beitostolen is a great place to learn or improve. The uncrowded slopes mean plenty of rooms to perfect those turns and there is often the chance of some fresh powder just at the side of the piste. There is also a small fun park with a half-pipe, jumps, rails and fun boxes – a great place to master tricks.
Apres Ski
This compact resort of Beitostolen is situated around the base of the ski area, with accommodation no more than 300m from the central meeting area. With all the resort facilities within easy walking distance, guests will find it extremely hassle-free to get around. For a small village, there is a surprising number of restaurants, bars and shops to choose from, plus a supermarket and bakery, all housed in attractive wooden cabins. Après ski tends to be low key during the week in one of the four bars in resort, but livens up on weekends and during public holidays when live bands often play. Off the slopes, there are plenty of activities to choose from and during the winter, organised family activities every day, geared towards parents and children.
