Sansicario is a small and tastefully designed purpose-built ski resort on the Italian side of the huge Milky Way pass, which joins half a dozen resorts from Montgenevre in France to Pragelato in Italy.

Sansicario is situated between the large resorts of Sauze d`Oulx and Sestriere on one side, and Cesana and Claviere on the other. The area was the main venue for the 2006 Winter Olympics and Sansicario played a major part, hosting the women's downhill, Super G and biathlon events.

The resort is made up predominantly of low-rise apartments with wooden balconies and convenient access direct on to the snow. It has been built at a reasonably snowsure altitude and there is one of Europe's largest snowmaking systems operational on the local slopes.

A monorail funicular connects the upper, lower and middle levels of the resort so that visitors do not need to use their cars or walk up and down stairs, and the resort is largely car free.

The village's relatively central location between the three major resorts of the Milky Way circuit (Montgenevre, Sauze d`Oulx and Sestriere), makes it better positioned than any one of the larger resorts to access both ends of this huge area.
  • Skiing for Beginners+

An easy to ride 'baby chairlift' takes beginners up to the top of the local gentle blue nursery slopes and, with guidance from the highly-rated ski school, first time skiers are soon progressing to the higher slopes.

Ski school lessons normally last for three hours daily in the morning and we offer well-priced beginner's packages including tuition, rentals and lift ticket at a lower cost than buying these separately in resort.
  • Intermediate Skiing+

Intermediates have a fairly vast array of opportunities on their apartment doorstep each morning, with the choice of heading to the highest slopes in the area over above Sestriere where dozens of red runs criss cross the open powder bowls.

Or head over to Sauze d`Oulx's large ski area where most of the trails are cut down through the forests. Or to make the longer excursion via Cesana, and Italy's oldest ski resort Claviere on the French border over to Montgenevre in France and to visit that resort's famous 'Mountains of the Moon' sector.

What's certain is that there's no way six days will be enough to see it all.
  • Advanced+

Advanced skiers will be spoilt for choice in the region, with both Olympic and World Cup runs to tackle and a huge choice of off-piste options, including powder tours with the ski school, ski mountaineering and heliskiing with guides.

Runs in the Amphitaeatro bowl and the blacks at the top of Sises and Motta above Sestriere are recommended. Mount Sises provides access to excellent off piste from the slopes of Valle Ripa and Vallone del Chisonetto.
  • Snowboarding at Sansicario+

Snowboarding was the one snow sport not hosted in the Milky Way region, but the area is well equipped for boarders with endless freeriding terrain and four terrain parks to choose from.

Sansicario's terrain park is situated 200 metres from the resort's shopping and restaurant mall and can easily be accessed on foot. It is located between the Baby and Rio Envers lifts. There are three jumps, one funbox and a variety of rails.

The park has access to the Baby chairlift and reduced price lift passes are offered to those that use it alone. The park also organises a series of freestyle ski and snowboard camps.

Sauze d`Oulx, Sansicario's neighbour, recently created a new terrain park complete with jumps rails, and Sestriere also has a well established park. Pre-Olympic investment in new high speed lifts makes whizzing around between the parks much quicker and easier than it used to be.
  • Other Activities And Facilities at Sansicario+

Facilities in Sansicario are fairly limited, there are just a handful of shops as well as a post office and laundrette. The mini shopping mall includes bakers, butchers and a supermarket. There is a swimming pool (bring a swimming cap) and fitness facilities including sauna in the Hotel Majestic.

There is also indoor tennis and one of the bars has a pool table, darts and table football. A 200 seat cinema shows different films every night, although usually in Italian.

Snowmobiling, snow shoeing, ice climbing, winter hiking and paragliding are also available locally, and there are seven kilometres of cross country ski trails. Test driving quad bikes and four wheel drive cars is also popular on snow tracks and unpaved roads.
  • Apres Ski And Dining Out+

Sansicario has fairy limited nightlife opportunities with just a handful of bars and restaurants. In the former category the Action Café is the resort's main night spot. The Barfly cocktail bar is open to 2am with happy hour and live music, and the Black Sun disco is the late night dance spot.

The self-service F.lli Barzotto restaurant is the largest in the resort: capable of catering for 600, it provides a pizzeria, sandwich and coffee bar. The Dolce Basilico is Sansicario's leading restaurant, serving high calibre food in stylish surroundings with live music and theme nights often organised.

The Sansicario Wine House serves typical dishes from Piedmont and France including fondue, raclette, bourguignonne, bagna cauda and pierrade.
  • Ski Holidays in Sansicario suitable for Families+

Sansicario provides an unintimidating, laid back and friendly base for a family ski holiday, with a relatively short transfer from Turin airport.

The resort has a Junior Club which can look after children aged two years and older, the ski school has a ski kindergarten for children aged four and older with special children's ski school classes to age twelve.

Children aged up to 13 must wear a helmet by Italian law and these are available to rent locally.
