Pragelato was an unheard-of back water on the international ski circuit before the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics.

The resort then hosted several Nordic ski events, including cross country skiing and ski jumping competitions, and made two important decisions which saw it leap in to the ski holiday brochures.

Firstly there was the development of a five star luxury ski resort, and secondly there was the installation of a new gondola link connecting the resort to the huge Milky Way ski area at Sestriere in just eight minutes, opening up 400km (250 miles) of skiing.

Built on the border of the Val Tronchea national park, the resort enjoys the kind of peace and tranquillity unknown to its lively neighbour, Sauze d`Oulx.

Now run by the world class Kempinski group, Pragelato Village in the beautiful Piedmont region, is just one and a half hour's drive from Turin and offers a unique stay in the mountains attracting guests from all over Europe.

The stunning chalet complex has fabulous facilities, with total relaxation and pampering the priorities. The complex is the main draw for visitors to the resort, although there is additionally the small original village.

The new resort includes four restaurants, an exclusive spa, a children's club, and a host of mountain sports.
  • Skiing for Beginners+

Beginners have gentle nursery slopes, and lifts are located right outside the ski school building in the centre of Sestriere, reached in under ten minutes from Pragelato resort.

As the week progresses and you master technique, beginners are likely to progress on to the easy tree-lined blues down to Borgata.
  • Intermediate Skiing+

Although intermediates will be tempted to hop straight on to the gondola each morning to access the vast Milky Way ski area, one of the world's largest, stretching from Sestriere over the border to Montgenevre in France, Pragelato actually has a moderate sized ski area of its own that's worth a look and with predominantly intermediate level skiing. There are a dozen red pistes by the village with some excellent runs through the local woods.
  • Advanced+

Experts have limited terrain locally in Pragelato so will probably want to head straight to Sestriere where runs in the Amphitaeatro bowl and the blacks at the top of Motta are highly rated.

Another piste good skiers should aim for is Mount Sises, which also gives access to excellent off piste from the slopes of Valle Ripa and Vallone del Chisonetto. This is the World Cup and World Championships giant slalom run accessed by the Cit Roc quad and then a ski-lift.

Heli-skiing is popular in the area.
  • Snowboarding at Pragelato+

Boarders will most likely want to head straight to Sestrière on the gondola to access the resort's snowpark, one of several on the Milky Way circuit, although Olympic snowboarding events were staged in nearby Bardonecchia, which is not on the circuit. The area has a large number of chair lifts making it easy to get up the mountains.
  • Other Activities And Facilities at Pragelato+

Pragelato was the host of Olympic ski jumping events and offers visitors the chance to try ski jumping, including the rare opportunity to tackle the Olympic Ski Jump hill connected to an aerial cable, so that you can experience the thrill of the jump in full, without the fear of knowing how to land properly.

Other activities available in resort include snowshoe hiking, snowmobiling, ice climbing, snow or ice driving courses and snow or ice quad bike driving sessions.

Val Tronchea Park has plenty of winter walking opportunities and, as Pragelato was the 2006 Olympic cross country ski centre, one of the legacies from the Games is a fantastic cross-country skiing network with 10km of trails locally.

The Mineralia Wellness Center is the spa at the Kempinski Pragelato Village. The modern and state-of-the-art design is focused on the mountain elements the spa offers. Facilities include a heated indoor 15 metre pool, hydro massage, mixed sauna area, Turkish bath and chromatic showers.
  • Apres Ski And Dining Out+

The resort has two bars and four contrasting restaurants, each with its own style. Il Ritrovo is the main après ski venue, set on two levels, with a fire place on the lower level along with large comfortable sofas and rustic log tables.

After dinner, live music and DJ's entertain on some evenings and there is dancing until 1am. For dining, La Tuccia is the main hotel restaurant open every day for both buffet breakfast and dinner.

La Taverna is a cozy restaurant in the style of a wine cellar with local specialties served, and open five days a week. Pan Beni is the resort's fine dining restaurant serving gourmet Italian food.

The Bergian is the local pizzeria where you can enjoy freshly prepared pizzas from a traditional wooden oven. There are more choices in the original Pragelato village.
  • Ski Holidays in Pragelato suitable for Families+

The Casa Pinocchio children's club has its own two-storey clubhouse, and a professional team cares for guests' children. Children aged between six weeks and 12 years are welcome here and the facility is open from 9am to 6pm every day.

Handicrafts, role-play, jigsaw puzzles and games keep the children occupied indoors, while the surrounding garden is perfect for mini competitions, building snowmen and playing on the baby ski slope.

Younger guests up to two years of age are charged at €12 per hour which is payable locally. Older children aged three to 12 years are cared for free if they are guests staying in the hotel suites, or at €15 per day for guests staying in the apartments.

Children can enroll for ski school lessons daily, with English speaking Pragelato instructors teaching basic technique in absolute safety. The swimming pool has 'Kids' time' for four - twelve year olds supervised by their parents daily from 2 - 5pm.
